Resolution vs. Intention for 2022

Well, here we are. The last day of 2021. Tomorrow marks 2022, the start of a brand new year.

I can’t help it, I love the thought of a new year. A blank slate. A fresh start. However, the one thing I can’t really get down with is New Year’s resolutions. Maybe it’s the literal definition, “a firm decision to do or not to do something” that feels suffocating to me. Maybe it’s the fact that every single year I set a resolution, after a couple of months I’m like resolution what? I’m not quite sure what it is but this year, I’m approaching things differently.

I’m not setting resolutions, I’m setting intentions. I want to be intentional about the things I’m putting effort into. I think intention creates a space that is supportive and encourages me to dig deep into the WHY behind what I’m doing. Intentions are about being in the moment. Not some elusive thing hanging out there in the future. Intentions support goals from the inside.

Here’s a resolution that I hear often:

“I want to lose weight.”

Here is an example of an intention:

“I intend to lead a healthier lifestyle this year, by eating more mindfully and moving my body more.”

Feel the difference?

So as you think about what you want for your new year, I invite you to try out intention setting. I think you’ll find it’s a more positive way to achieve the things you want to achieve.

I wish you love and wellness,
Beth
